 What are Black Holes?

Black holes are the most fascinating objects in our universe, and also the most mysterious. A black hole is a region in space with limitless gravitational attraction where the matter is compressed to an extreme point. Not even light, the fastest known entity in our universe can escape the black hole. Anything that gets too close to a black hole will be pulled in and crushed into a point of infinite density, known as a singularity.

How Black Holes Are Formed?

Black holes can form in several ways. The most common way is through the collapse of massive stars. When a star runs out of fuel, its core collapses under its own gravity, creating a supernova explosion that blows off the outer layers of the star. The core of the star collapses down into a point of infinite density, forming a black hole.



How Black Holes are Detected?

Black holes are invisible because they do not emit light which means they are invisible the only way for scientists to detect and study them is to observe their effect on nearby matter. Scientists look for evidence of intense, high-energy radiation, such as X-rays or gamma rays, coming from a region of space that has no visible light source.

Scientists have theorized several different types of black holes but we will discuss only the most common one below:-

  • Stellar:- Stellar black holes are forms when massive stars die and collapse. They are approximately 10 to 20 times the mass of our sun, and are scattered throughout the universe. There could be millions of these stellar black holes in the milky way galaxy alone.
  • Intermediate black:- Intermediate black holes have a mass of 100 to 10,000 times that of the sun. They are large in size than the stellar black hole.
  • Supermassive:- Supermassive black holes are giants by comparison, measuring millions, even billions of times, more massive than our sun.

Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole at the center of the milky way, has a mass of roughly four million suns.


Some Properties of Black Holes

 Black holes have several unique properties that make them fascinating to scientists.

  • Event horizon:- The event horizon is the point of no return, beyond which nothing can escape.
  • Singularity:- The singularity is the point at the center of a black hole where the laws of physics break down.
  • Spaghettification:- Spaghettification is the process by which an object is stretched into a long, thin shape as it gets closer to the black hole.
